The best first date ideas in Trivandrum are easy, public and cheap: sunset at Shanghumugham Beach, a walk around the Napier Museum grounds, coffee at the Indian Coffee House, or an evening at Veli. Choose somewhere with a view or something to look at, so neither of you has to fill every silence.

A good first date is short, in a busy place, and easy to extend or end. Trivandrum is well suited to that: the city is spread out but its best meeting spots are public and full of people in the evening. Timings and entry rules change, so check before you go.

1. Sunset at Shanghumugham Beach

The easiest first date in the city. Shanghumugham is wide, busy in the evening and close to town. Walk along the sand, look at the huge reclining mermaid sculpture by Kanayi Kunhiraman, and get a snack from the stalls. There is always something going on, which keeps the pressure low.

2. The Napier Museum and museum grounds

A leafy, safe walk right in the middle of the city. The grounds around the Napier Museum are popular with walkers morning and evening. The museum building itself is striking, and the paths give you an easy loop for talking. Kanakakunnu Palace grounds are next door if you want to keep walking.

3. Coffee at the Indian Coffee House

Cheap, iconic and a conversation starter in itself. The Indian Coffee House near Thampanoor is known for its round, spiralling building. It is not a place to linger for hours, which makes it perfect for a first coffee with a natural end point.

4. An evening at Veli Tourist Village

Where the lake meets the sea, with sculptures to wander between. Veli has gardens, a boating lake and more of Kanayi Kunhiraman's sculptures. A pedal boat is a good activity if you both like doing something rather than sitting across a table.

5. The Priyadarshini Planetarium

A show under the stars that does not require either of you to talk. It is a good pick for a nervous first meeting, because you share an experience first and chat about it afterwards. Check show times and languages before you go.

6. Kovalam and the Lighthouse Beach

A classic, but better on a weekday evening. Kovalam is busier and more touristy than Shanghumugham. The lighthouse viewpoint gives you a small shared goal, and the beach promenade has plenty of cafés for afterwards. Check the lighthouse visiting hours.

7. Akkulam for a quiet park walk

Calmer than the beaches, still public. The lake and park at Akkulam suit a slower daytime date, when you would rather hear each other than the waves.

8. Share evening snacks and keep walking

Food is the fastest icebreaker. Pick a well-known spot for evening tea and snacks, share something, and let the other person choose too. Walking afterwards keeps the date light and easy to end.

9. A boat trip at Poovar, for later

A longer outing for when you already get on. Poovar's backwater boat rides take you towards the estuary and the beach. It takes a good part of a day, so save it for a later date.

10. A day trip to Varkala Cliff, for later still

Clifftop cafés and a long sea view. Varkala is a trip out of the city, so it works best once you have met a few times and want a whole day together.
