Dating apps where you talk before you see photos
Short answer: if you want to hear someone's voice before you see their photos, JustThen has Vibe Check, an opt-in voice intro where you see only a first name and photos stay hidden, alongside a normal swipe deck. Taken and Flamor are blind-dating apps where photos come later. Goodnight is built around voice calls. Hinge and Bumble show photos first, but Hinge profiles can include your voice and Bumble lets matches video chat.

JustThen: swipe, or hear someone first
JustThen is a dating app made in India, open to everyone, on iPhone and Android. It has the familiar swipe deck, with likes, super likes, pass and rewind, and matching that weighs personality as well as photos. Next to it sits Vibe Check, an optional way to meet someone new by voice:
- Before the call you see the other person's first name, nothing else, and can accept, skip or block.
- During the call it is voice only. Either of you can reveal details, such as profession or what you are looking for, one at a time.
- If you both send a Vibe, it is a match and you can see each other's profile.
- The call runs inside the app, so neither of you shares a phone number.
Once matched, you can talk by message, voice note or love letter, a longer sealed written message. Profiles are verified before they appear. JustThen first launched in 2023 as Hridhayam.
Taken: voice intros, photos after a match
Taken describes itself as a blind dating app where you “meet people through voices and vibes, not photos.” Your profile leads with a voice intro, you swipe on voices, and its listing says photos unlock only after you both match.
Flamor: blind dates first
Flamor puts “blind date experiences at the core” and pitches itself to people tired of endless swiping. You chat before seeing the full profile. It is one of the newest apps here, launched in 2025.
Goodnight: voice calls
Goodnight calls itself “the voice dating app” and is built around short voice calls with new people, which it says might be a seven-minute, date-like chat. Its listing does not say when photos are shown, so check before you sign up if that matters to you.
Hinge and Bumble: photos first, voice and video after
Hinge and Bumble are photo-first apps, but both make room for more than pictures. Hinge profiles can include video and voice alongside photos and prompts. Bumble lets you video chat with your matches before you meet. Neither hides photos, but both have far more members than the smaller apps above, especially in big cities.
Why talk before photos?
A photo invites a judgement in a second. A voice carries humour, warmth and how someone listens, which pictures cannot show. Hearing someone first lets attraction build on conversation, with photos coming later. It also protects privacy: on apps that hide photos, nobody can screenshot your face before you decide to share it.
How to choose
- You want a normal dating app with a talk-first option: JustThen, which has both a swipe deck and Vibe Check.
- You want photos hidden until you match: Taken, or JustThen's Vibe Check.
- You want live voice calls with new people: JustThen's Vibe Check or Goodnight.
- You want the biggest pool and are happy to see photos first: Hinge or Bumble, then use voice and video before meeting.
Whichever you pick, keep early chats in the app, never send money to someone you met online, and meet somewhere public. The JustThen Safety Centre has practical advice that applies to any app.
Questions people ask
Is there a dating app where you hear someone before you see them?
Yes. JustThen's Vibe Check is a voice intro where you see only a first name and photos stay hidden until you choose to share them. Taken uses voice recordings and unlocks photos after a match, and Goodnight is built around voice calls.
Does JustThen have swiping?
Yes. JustThen has a regular swipe deck with likes, super likes, pass and rewind. Vibe Check is an optional extra way to meet people by voice, not a replacement for swiping.
Is Vibe Check a video call?
No. Vibe Check is voice only, with no video and no photos during the call.
Are blind dating apps safe?
Hiding photos protects your privacy, but it does not tell you who someone is. Prefer apps that verify profiles, keep calls inside the app so you never share your number, and block and report anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
Which talk-first dating app is free?
All the apps here are free to download. On JustThen, Vibe Check is free with a daily number of requests, and Premium unlocks more.
